Guidelines for translators: a) Guidelines for individual translations: For the first set of translations performed by each translator separately, the guidelines were as follows: - It is not obligatory to use the same target translation for the same source word in different word pairs. - Flag any difficult translations, and comment in general if you have doubts or any remarks - If you cannot find two distinct words for source and target word, please flag it as difficult, and add a comment - If you find yourself using identical translation for two pairs, please add a comment - You can use the provided Croatian translation as an additional source - if gender is not marked in English (e.g. cat), try to pick the most natural one in Slovene, and if there is no clear gender interpretation, follow the Croatian one - Translate word pairs (and not single words): constituent words in a pair act as a disambiguation signal. Regarding multiple senses, try to pick the one that is most true to the original within the context of the word pair and will maintain the similarity score as much as possible - It is common that some words in a given language have a sense set that is not conveyed by any of the words of another given language. For example, the English word plane, from the WS353 pair (car, plane), has both the airplane and the geometric plane senses. However, to the best of our translators’ knowledge, no German, Italian or Russian word has these two senses. Use the other word in the pair for sense disambiguation. In our example, plane is translated to the target language word which has the airplane meaning (e.g. Flugzeug in German, aeroplano in Italian), since this sense is closer to the meaning of car. - In cases where the other word in the pair does not clearly disambiguate the sense of its polysemous counterpart, randomly choose one, and if possible match to the sense selected in the Croatian translation. b) Guidelines for translators for final list: In the consensus meeting for producing the final list, the two translators considered the differences in their translations and followed the following guidelines: - in case of disagreement, opt for translations without multi-word expressions, minimizing cases where two words are mapped to the same translation (no synonym exceptions) and minimize duplicate pairs.
